Hope for Hill Residents Struggling with Increased Sewage Odor from Nearby Treatment Facility

This summer has seen a ferocious spike in odor emanating from Portland Water District's East End Wastewater Treatment Facility located near Tukey's bridge along the Eastern Prom trail. The smelly air from the facility rises to the top of Munjoy Hill, then settles on the neighborhood, blanketing residents in the unmistakable funk of human waste. Many people have called the facility in recent weeks as well as complained across social media of not being able to open windows and of parents and children at the East End Community School gagging from the smell.

Locals have reason to be hopeful however, according to new details from the Portland Water District.

The fourth annual Maine YogaFest is a three-day festival, estimated to attract approximately 650 attendees, offering 50 different classes and workshops for people of all skill and ability levels, from more challenging standup paddle-board and aerial yoga to guided meditations and body rolling designed to relax and restore.

In addition, the festival’s Vendor Village is free and open to the public. “This year we have more than 40 vendors and lots of activities, including contests, henna tattoos, free chair massages and live music. It’s all about health, wellness and local food,” said Carlisle. “We’re also offering two free community classes,” she says, adding that she hopes people from throughout Munjoy Hill and Portland will stop by and check out the festival.
